Popova was born in Russia and moved to the United States at a young age.[1] After taking up pair skating, she relocated to Germany, where she was coached by Ingo Steuer and tried out with several skaters.[1] She teamed up with French skater Bruno Massot in March 2011 and they began serious training by June.[2] They train in Caen, France.[1][3] Their first competition together was the 2011 Master's de Patinage, where they won the silver medal. They were 10th in their international debut at the Coupe Internationale de Nice and placed 4th at the NRW Trophy. In December 2011, they won the 2012 French national title.[4]
